VOLVO CE EXPANDS SOIL COMPACTOR LINEUP IN NORTH AMERICA WITH NEW 12-TON MODEL
Volvo Construction Equipment is broadening its compaction range in North America with a new model targeting medium- to heavy-duty compaction jobs. The new SD125 soil compactor is designed to provide exceptional results with low operating and ownership costs, making it a fit for both rental houses and highway contractors.
The 12-ton machine becomes the largest model in the Volvo soil compaction portfolio with an 84-inch smooth-drum and operating weight of 26,565 lbs. (12,050 kg). Its specs are similar to the existing SD115 but with a 0.2 in. (5 mm) thicker drum shell and a heavier outer eccentric weight. This results in an additional 935 lbs. (424 kg) of mass on the drum, increasing the static load and eccentric force for a different amplitude profile.
"The SD125 is a direct response to dealers and customers who have asked for a machine that combines the quality and performance of the SD115 with the heavier weight of a 12-ton machine,” said Justin Zupanc, Compaction Product Manager. “We take feedback seriously, and I think this model shows that.”
Superior Performance
As terrain and material depths change, the ability to adjust dynamic drum forces is as simple as the flip of a switch on the new SD125. Another switch adjusts the two drum frequencies to compensate for changing conditions, and a five-frequency feature is available as an option to further boost versatility and performance.
The center joint provides +/-35 degrees of articulation and +/-12 degrees of drum oscillation for stable yet flexible performance and greater operator comfort over rough terrain. Because the drum is in constant contact with the ground, compaction is smooth and uniform.
The additional static weight on the drum frame enhances stability and performance with the ability to negotiate 35% slopes for better gradeability. The angled frame allows higher clearance in the approach to steep slopes and while loading, eliminating the possibility of damaging the surface or the machine. The frame and articulation joint are covered by the Volvo Lifetime Frame and Structure Warranty.
A heavy-duty axle is integrated into the drivetrain for an efficient rear wheel drive system. The No-Spin differential increases traction, eliminates tire slippage and improves gradeability, performance and productivity. A high-traction variant is available for demanding applications where additional torque is needed to tackle extreme slopes or thick lifts of loose material.

All three levels of Compact Assist software are available on the in-cab tablet (the Volvo Co-Pilot) allowing users to determine the visibility, mapping and reporting features that are most important to them.
A More Sustainable Design
The SD125 features a powerful Tier 4F four-cylinder Volvo engine with 147.5 hp (110 kW). Active DPF regeneration eliminates material build-up, further reducing emissions. The engine is backed by Volvo dealer service and parts support and a 1,000-hour warranty.
Additional features include:
- A hydraulically operated engine cooling fan that runs only when needed, reducing fuel consumption.
- Lower noise levels for operator comfort.
- Optional fan reverse for cleaning out the coolers.
- Volvo long-life coolant to protect the machine for up to 6,000 hours.
- Remote hydraulic test ports that can be configured to enable quick and easy hydraulic checkpoints without having to open the system.
In line with the Volvo commitment to safety, the emergency stop system shuts down the engine, applies the brakes and stops the machine’s movement if the operator rises from the seat for more than five seconds during operation.

The SD125 is designed and built at the Volvo CE North American headquarters in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, along with all Volvo asphalt and soil compactors. This year marks 50 years of compaction engineering and manufacturing at the site.
The SD125 will be available for order in North America during the first half of 2025.
NEW-GEN ARTICULATED HAULERS PACKED WITH PRODUCTIVITY AND SAFETY UPGRADES
Seven new-generation models include significant updates to the 28- to 61-ton articulated dump trucks and an entirely new size class with the 50-ton A50. Designed to meet customers’ evolving needs, this launch marks the latest makeover of a Volvo CE product line, following the introduction of the company’s new-generation excavators in 2024.
Updates in the new articulated hauler series include improved fuel efficiency, a redesigned cab with a host of new features, enhanced safety, simpler maintenance and much more.
“Articulated haulers handle some of the toughest tasks in the most challenging terrain,” said Tyler Smith, Product Manager — Articulated Haulers. “We took customer feedback and completely redesigned what was already the world's best articulated hauler lineup. These new Volvo haul trucks are built to be the workhorses customers need to get their toughest jobs done on time and on budget.”

What’s Inside: Unbeatable Performance
Multiple new features on the Volvo articulated dump trucks guarantee maximum productivity across the most demanding projects in quarrying, mining, construction and more.
A new electronic system and a new Volvo-developed transmission help reduce fuel usage across the product range. Plus, the new series is designed in such a way that the haulers can be adapted for future drivetrain technologies.
The Volvo drivetrain with Terrain Memory ensures fuel efficiency without compromising power, thanks to its ability to identify and remember slippery road segments. Automatic drive, 100% differential locks and all-terrain bogie, and hydro-mechanical steering work together to provide traction, stability and precise control.
Volvo Dynamic Drive offers predictive gear selection that adapts to operating conditions, and a downhill speed control function relies on Volvo’s industry-leading braking systems to further enhance efficiency, safety and comfort.
Additionally, the frame and body design provide market-leading tipping clearance and material flow when dumping, minimizing the need for support equipment on the jobsite. Further improvements include an optional overhung tailgate with longer arms for a quicker and wider opening when dumping.
Operator Comfort and Visibility Matter
“Operators spend long days in these machines, so we want to make them as happy as possible,” said Smith. “I think they’ll love the new cabs.
”The fully redesigned cab includes a larger floor area, new hanging pedals and steering wheel, a heated or cooled storage box for food and drink, an adjustable seat, Bluetooth connectivity, USB ports for charging devices, ergonomic levers and switch layouts, and better noise reduction.
A lower hood profile, reconfigured and larger window panels, additional LED lighting and wider windshield wiper coverage result in a field of vision that exceeds industry standards. Optional front and rear cameras and a standard entrance camera — all of which are managed via the Volvo Co-Pilot — further enhance visibility.
Entering and exiting the hauler cab is simpler and safer with a repositioned door, railings on both sides and focused lighting on the stairs and platform.
A startup button is now found at ground level, illuminating the stairs and booting up controls. Once in the cab, the operator turns the key to fully start the machine. At the end of the day, the switch does not need to be turned off — the key alone takes care of shutdown.
Working Harder and Safer for Longer
Volvo’s updated articulated dump truck range is engineered for durability with reinforced axles that are capable of withstanding heavier loads and higher torque. Safety is also prioritized with new harness anchor points in the cab that meet OSHA and WorkSafeBC regulations.
Maintenance is now safer, simpler and faster because of longer service intervals and easier component access. A new access ladder is hidden under the hood, and the hood can be raised or lowered with the push of a button. The entire engine compartment is illuminated, and the condenser package has moved to the right side of the cab.
Industry-leading greasing intervals of 250 hours eliminate the need for daily or weekly greasing, further boosting productivity and reducing downtime. In general, Volvo articulated haulers require less fluid volume than other brands, which benefits the environment and reduces operating costs.
Smarter Solutions for Intuitive Operation
Already considered many operators’ haul trucks of choice, Volvo’s updated models make it even easier for them to stay in-the-know with two in-cab screens that display essential information.
The updated interactive Volvo Co-Pilot display offers easy control of functions like media, camera settings, climate control and machine status. A dynamic instrument cluster positioned in front of the steering wheel provides important vehicle data at a glance.
Technology like Haul Assist with on-board weighing takes productivity to another level by providing real-time payload data to prevent overloading and minimize carry back, which also reduces fuel consumption and machine wear.
Traffic flow, vehicle performance and on-site logistics can be improved with the use of digital tools like Connected Map, Performance Indicator and Site Optimization. The ActiveCare Direct™ telematics system supports machine uptime and reduces repair costs.
These updated haulers are future-ready thanks to a new software architecture that allows customers to incorporate future upgrades and smart solutions, ensuring their equipment stays current with cutting-edge technology.
The new-generation A35, A40, A45 and A50 will be available to order in North America starting in Q1, with additional models launching later in 2025 to round out the full lineup of seven models.
